Fawn Doberman – Basic Facts You Should Know

Table of Contents

Before you bring a Fawn Doberman home here are some basic facts you should know. The breed is quite rare but not all dogs are fawn. Its name means velcro as it follows its owner around the house constantly. Nevertheless these dogs respond to early socialization and training. They should be exposed to other dogs especially kids as early socialization can curb some of the aggressive behaviors that the breed has been known for.

What is a fawn Doberman?

Dobermans come in a variety of colors including red fawn apricot and white Dobermans. Fawn Dobermans are the rarest of all with only about 6% of the total population displaying this color. This color variation comes from the presence of a recessive gene that dilutes the red color. Fawn Dobermans are more expensive than other Dobermans and might be difficult to enter in dog show competition.

Compared to other dogs Fawn Dobermans are low-maintenance and require little grooming. Their coat is easy to brush and maintain but they are prone to skin diseases and hair loss. If you notice thinning hair you should visit a veterinarian. If the problem persists your veterinarian may prescribe a special shampoo. Your dog’s teeth will require regular brushing.

Are fawn Dobermans rare?

Fawn Dobermans are a rare breed of Doberman a large German dog. They are very similar to their black and white counterparts but the main difference is their coloration. Fawn Dobermans are generally between 24 and 28 inches tall at the withers. They tend to weigh between sixty and one hundred pounds although some dogs will fall outside these parameters. Female Fawn Dobermans are smaller and lighter than males so their size can vary quite a bit.

While white Dobermans are extremely rare the majority of them are actually diluted. The reason that they are diluted is because some breeders exploit the albino gene in their dogs. This can lead to significant health problems in the dogs such as photophobia and eye-related complications. While this can cause undesirable behaviors in fawn Dobermans it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are unhealthy.

How long do fawn Dobermans live?

If you are considering buying a Doberman you will want to be aware of how long they can live. The average life expectancy for a Fawn Doberman is between 10 and 13 years. Be sure to do some research before purchasing one and make sure the breeder is reputable. If possible meet the mother of the dog you’re interested in. The average Fawn Doberman costs around $2000.

Dobermans are known for their high activity levels and they need plenty of exercise to stay fit and healthy. But they also require proper nutrition. Make sure to discuss your dog’s diet with your vet so they can recommend the right food for your dog. Make sure you keep in mind how much food your dog needs as obesity can drastically shorten your dog’s life expectancy. In addition to proper diet your dog will also need daily exercise.

Do fawn Dobermans have skin problems?

Fawn Dobermans can suffer from a variety of skin conditions including alopecia. While not life-threatening color-dilution alopecia also known as CDA can affect your pup. It is caused by an abnormal number of granules in the hair shaft. Non-CDA dogs have evenly-spaced granules in their hair shaft while CDA-affected dogs have clumped granules in the hair shaft. This clumping makes the hair shaft fragile and in some cases even causes your dog to suffer from alopecia.

While Fawn Dobermans are relatively low-maintenance dogs they can develop skin diseases. Among these is muzzle folliculitis which results in lesions on the muzzle. Treatment for this problem depends on the severity of the condition but can be managed with oral antibiotics or topical antimicrobials. Veterinary care is also recommended since both skin disease and hair loss are caused by an imbalanced diet. Taking care of your dog’s teeth is important as well.
