What are Doberman pinschers known for?

The Doberman Pinscher is a powerful member of the Working Group. Developed for police and military work this dog also enjoys companionship in the home. Originally from Germany the Doberman breed gained popularity in other countries thanks to its courage and intelligence. Despite its history it is unknown exactly how the Doberman pinscher got its name. Some people believe that the breed’s name is derived from Rottweilers and Manchester terriers. However many breeds were involved in the development of the breed so it is impossible to be sure which one is the true parent of this breed.

A Doberman pinscher can be diagnosed with several medical conditions including hypothyroidism. Hypothyroidism occurs when the body is unable to produce enough thyroid hormone. Signs include a loss of fur and hair on the body as well as an increased susceptibility to certain skin diseases. These symptoms can be accompanied by other symptoms such as aggressive behavior and fearfulness. Blood tests can detect hypothyroidism and treatment usually involves the administration of synthetic hormones.

What makes a Doberman unique?

Dobermans come in seven colors: black rust brindle blue and white. Only one of the seven is considered full albino and this dog is significantly whiter than the other colors. The easiest way to identify an albino is by looking at its eyes. The color of its eyes indicates whether the dog is a full or partial albino. While white Dobermans are rare they can be spotted.

The first white Doberman came out in 1976 when Queen Shebah of Padula’s breed had a white male born to black and rust parents. Her son was bred with his sisters to produce more white puppies. This process has led to a much more expensive and rare variety of dog. Dobermans have long been prized for their ability to work and protect their master. But the question remains what makes a Doberman unique?

Are Dobermans the smartest dog?

When asked if Doberman Pinschers are the smartest dogs owners generally respond in a similar fashion. This breed of dog is naturally a guard dog and as such it must be trained and socialized to learn to distinguish between good and bad people. This is essential in developing the breed’s instinctive IQ and recognizing who is a friend and who is a foe.

According to psychologist Stanley Coren the Doberman Pinscher is the fifth smartest dog breed in the world. Other research suggests that the breed is second to only a few other dog breeds. This is based on an extensive survey of select dog trainers and owners. Hart and Tortora ranked the Doberman Pinscher as the most obedient dog breed.

Can Dobermans see at night?

A common question from dog owners is ‘Can Doberman Pinschers see at night?’ The answer is a resounding ‘yes.’ The Doberman has average eyesight and a combination of high and low amounts of cones and rods in the retina. Their distance vision is approximately 6 meters which is surprisingly good considering the size of their pupils. However there are three main reasons for dog blindness and they should be treated accordingly.

The answer to this question depends on your dog’s eye health and breed. First do a menace reflex test. To perform the menace reflex test hold a cotton ball at 17 to 19 inches away from the dog’s eyes. While the dog should remain quiet try moving your hand toward the dog’s eyes. If it reacts to the cotton ball it is highly likely that your dog is experiencing eye problems. If it does you should contact your veterinarian and have your dog tested immediately.
